Wae Rebo from Labuan Bajo: the 2-day trip to the village of cone-shaped houses
5 min read
The answer first. Wae Rebo is not a day trip. The trips compared here are all two days with one night in the village, because the drive is several hours and the last stretch is a hike. The 2D1N Exotic Waerebo Village from Labuan Bajo (€119.84 per person, 4.7 from 186 reviews) is the most reviewed of them and includes meals and a night in a traditional house.
Check before you book. The village closed to visitors after the earthquake of 15 August 2026 because of landslide risk on the trail. It reopened on 1 September 2026, on a trial basis and with limited visits; the head of the Wae Rebo cultural council said it can close again at any time if conditions are unsafe (detik, 1 September 2026). Ask the operator whether the trek is open for your date.
What the village is
Wae Rebo sits in the mountains of Manggarai, West Flores. The Indonesian tourism site gives its height as around 1,100 metres and counts seven houses; two listings say 1,200 metres, the shared tour 1,100. The houses are called Mbaru Niang. In 2012 UNESCO gave the community-led rebuilding of these houses an Asia-Pacific Heritage Award of Excellence (UNESCO, 2012 award winners). That is a regional conservation award, not World Heritage status, although some tourism pages say otherwise. Indonesia Travel also says the village has no mobile coverage, that electricity is available from 6 to 10 pm, that it is cold, especially in the dry season, and that the walk from Denge takes 3 to 4 hours (Indonesia Travel, Wae Rebo).
The 2-day trips compared
| Trip | Group | Drive to Denge | Hike | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2D1N Exotic Waerebo Village | Shared, up to 30 | 3 hours in the description, 7 to 11 am in the itinerary | Trek 2 to 5 pm | €119.84 |
| Exploring Wae Rebo Village 2-Day Tour | Small group, up to 10 | About 5 hours | 2 to 3 hours | €128.86 |
| Wae Rebo 2D1N Shared Tour | Small group, up to 15 | 4 to 5 hours | 2 to 3 hours | €131.38 |
| Wae Rebo Village Trekking Tour with Meals | Private car with driver | About 3.5 hours for the drive back | About 9 km, 2.5 hours uphill | €128.86 |
The drive times differ by up to two hours between listings, so plan the first day as a full day whichever you book. The village’s cultural council lets no one start the climb after 4 pm, so that walkers arrive before 6 pm (detik, April 2025).
What is included
All four list the night in the village in a Mbaru Niang house or a village house, and meals: the most reviewed tour lists lunch on both days, dinner on day one and breakfast on day two; the Exploring Wae Rebo Village 2-Day Tour lists lunch on both days plus a simple dinner and breakfast. The most reviewed tour also lists a motorbike taxi from Denge to the sanctuary entrance, a ceremony fee and parking; the Exploring Wae Rebo Village 2-Day Tour lists all donations and permits in the village. Tips and personal expenses are not included. On day two the most reviewed tour plans a stop at the Lingko spider-web rice fields, marked “tentative” and depending on time and the state of the fields.
Who should skip it
The 2D1N Exotic Waerebo Village and the Exploring Wae Rebo Village 2-Day Tour list pregnant women, wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments as not suitable. The 2D1N tour also lists people afraid of heights, with vertigo, altitude sickness or high blood pressure, and people over 70; the 2-Day Tour also lists people with heart problems or respiratory issues. The trekking tour with a private car lists wheelchair users, mobility impairments, low fitness and people over 70. The only age statement for children is on the trekking tour with a private car: children from 7 are welcome with parental supervision. It also says April to November is ideal and that the trail may be muddy in the rainy season. The Wae Rebo 2D1N Shared Tour says that on some weekdays one person can go, while on others it needs two or the single traveller pays double.
Our recommendation
For most visitors, the 2D1N Exotic Waerebo Village: the most reviewed, with all meals and the stay in the price. If you prefer a smaller group, choose the Exploring Wae Rebo Village 2-Day Tour. Pack for cold and rain; see all options in the Wae Rebo village tours and Flores land tours categories.
