Where to see Komodo dragons from Labuan Bajo: Komodo or Rinca?
5 min read
The answer first. The two speedboat day trips in the table below put the dragon walk on Komodo Island, as one stop among several, for example the Komodo Island: Komodo Dragons & Islands Day Tour at €77.31 per person, rated 4.7 from 701 reviews. Rinca is the alternative if the dragons are the point of the day: the half-day yacht trip to Kelor and Rinca is a private charter priced per group of up to six, at €644.28.
Two islands, one park
UNESCO describes Komodo National Park as three major islands, Rinca, Komodo and Padar, plus many smaller ones. It puts the dragon population at around 5,700, spread across Komodo, Rinca, Gili Motong and some coastal parts of western and northern Flores (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, whc.unesco.org/en/list/609). Padar is on that list as an island of the park, but not as a dragon island, so a day trip that gets you only a Padar hike is not a dragon trip. One listing states it plainly: Rinca is part of the park, and dragons live on both Komodo and Rinca.
What the tours say
| Tour | Dragon stop | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Komodo Island: Komodo Dragons & Islands Day Tour | Komodo Island | 10-hour speedboat day trip with several stops |
| Komodo Island Day Tour with Snorkeling | Komodo Island, a stop of about 2 hours with a ranger-guided walk | 10-hour speedboat day trip |
| Komodo Dragons, Kelor Hike & Kalong Bats | Rinca, guided walk with a park ranger | Private yacht, half day, 4 to 6 hours |
In the Rinca listing, the morning option goes to Kelor and Rinca; the afternoon option goes to Rinca and then to Kalong Island at sunset, and the morning option does not visit Kalong.
What no listing promises
The Komodo Island Day Tour listing says the animals roam freely and that sightings are not guaranteed. The walks are led by a ranger, and the listings ask you to watch from a safe distance and follow the ranger’s instructions. One overnight listing adds that July and August are the dragons’ mating season and that only a few may be seen then. The Komodo Island Day Tour listing also says Komodo Island is managed by the government and may close temporarily, especially in November, December and January, with the announcement sometimes on the same day. Since 1 April 2026 the park admits at most 1,000 visitors a day (Antara, 14 April 2026), so ask your operator to confirm that your entry is booked. We could not find an official statement on which island gives better chances, so we do not rank them.
Fees and who should skip it
The Komodo Island day tours say park entry is paid on site in cash, and the Rinca listing contradicts itself: its inclusions name the park entrance fee, ranger and conservation fees, while its notes say entrance, marine and conservation fees are not included and are paid in cash on site. Ask the operator in writing which one applies. The Komodo listings exclude pregnant women and non-swimmers; the dragons tour also names people with back problems, limited mobility or a low level of fitness. The Rinca listing excludes wheelchair users and people prone to seasickness, among others.
Our recommendation
If you are doing the classic day trip anyway, take the dragon stop as part of it: Komodo Island Day Tour with Snorkeling is the most reviewed. If you travel as a group of up to six and the dragons matter more than snorkelling, the private Rinca half day is the focused option. See all Komodo day tours.
