Manta Point in Komodo: what a snorkelling stop can and cannot promise
4 min read
The answer first. Several listings that stop at Manta Point say the same thing: manta rays may be there, and nobody can promise it. If seeing mantas is your main reason to go, pick a trip built around the stop, and accept that it remains a chance. The Day Trip Snorkeling with Manta Rays and Turtles puts Manta Point first and is limited to small groups of up to 10 people; the listing prices it per group of up to 2, at €402.03. Rating: 5.0; number of reviews so far: 1.
How the stop appears in the plans
| Trip | Manta Point | From | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day Trip Snorkeling with Manta Rays and Turtles | First snorkelling stop, then Siaba and Sebayur; 8 hours; price per group of up to 2 | €402.03 | 5.0 | 1 |
| Full-Day Speedboat Tour | One of six stops, 30 minutes | €82.47 | 4.8 | 414 |
| Komodo Island Day Tour with Snorkeling | Snorkelling stop within the 10-hour day | €77.31 | 4.7 | 2,001 |
| 2D1N Komodo and Pink Beach Shared Boat Tour | Day two, “sea conditions permitting” | €159.73 | 4.2 | 520 |
On the full-day speedboat tour you get 30 minutes at Manta Point. For the manta-focused day trip, ask the operator how long you get at each stop.
What the listings admit
The Komodo Island Day Tour says in so many words that manta and turtle sightings are not guaranteed and depend on weather, water temperature and luck; the full-day speedboat tour says they depend on natural conditions and a bit of luck. The overnight trips add “sea conditions permitting”. A best month is something we cannot confirm from an official source, so we name none; ask the operator which months they find mantas most often, and treat the answer as that operator’s view.
The current
One 3-day sailing listing says Manta Point has the strongest current of the trip. Its guide enters the water first and stays with the group, and anyone who is not confident stays on a float line. That is one operator’s practice, not a rule for every boat, so ask how yours handles it.
Who should not book it for the mantas
The manta day trip lists non-swimmers and people prone to seasickness as not suitable, and the full-day speedboat tour lists people prone to seasickness, pregnant women, wheelchair users, people with pre-existing medical conditions and babies under one year. The Komodo Island day tour also excludes non-swimmers. A day built around three or four snorkelling stops means a lot of time on a small boat in whatever sea there is.
Our recommendation
If mantas are the reason for your trip, book the Day Trip Snorkeling with Manta Rays and Turtles, but note how few reviews it has so far (1) and expect a maybe. If you want Padar, Komodo Island and Pink Beach as well, take the Full-Day Speedboat Tour and treat Manta Point as a bonus. More trips are in the snorkelling and diving category.
