Komodo National Park from Labuan Bajo: day trip by speedboat or overnight sailing trip?

5 min read

The answer first. With one day to spare, take a full-day speedboat trip. The Komodo Island Day Tour with Snorkeling costs €77.31 per person and is rated 4.7 from 2,001 reviews. Its listing names Padar Island, Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Manta Point and two more snorkelling stops, all in about 10 hours. Choose a boat with a night on board only if you want more time and are happy with a shared cabin.

What a day trip covers

The three day trips above visit the same core: a hike on Padar, a beach stop at Pink Beach, a walk on Komodo Island and snorkelling at Manta Point and nearby islands. The shorter speedboat tour picks guests up between 5:30 and 6:15 am and says the boat usually returns to the harbour between 3 and 4 pm; its group size is up to 24 people. The 10-hour tour lists pickup in Labuan Bajo and leaves the exact times to the availability check. The first two listings say the order of stops can change with weather and sea conditions and that manta and turtle sightings are not guaranteed; the Komodo Island Day Tour says the same of the dragons. The island-hop tour warns that you should expect crowds at the stops.

What a night on board adds

The overnight trip starts at Kelor and Manjarite, then anchors at Kalong Island for the flying foxes at dusk. Day two begins with sunrise at Padar, followed by Pink Beach, Komodo Island and Manta Point, and the boat is back in Labuan Bajo between 5 and 6 pm. None of the day-trip listings above names Kalong. The price is a shared cabin: the listing says that a solo traveller may have to share a bed with another guest if no single bed is free, and it asks for a photo of your passport before the tour. The liveaboard and sailing tours category lists the longer options.

The park fee is where listings disagree

Read this part of every listing. The Komodo Island Day Tour and the tour called Komodo Island: Komodo Dragons & Islands Day Tour say the park entry is paid on site in cash. The shorter speedboat listing names a park ticket of IDR 400,000 per person but mixes included and excluded items in one list, so it is not clear from the text whether it is in the price. The island-hop tour with “all fees” in its title lists the park entry among the inclusions. The overnight listing names the Komodo Island entrance fee “if option selected”, again in a list that mixes included and excluded items, so whether it is in your price depends on the option you book. Treat all these figures as the operators’ statements and ask before you pay. One rule applies to every boat: since 1 April 2026 the park admits at most 1,000 visitors a day (Antara, 14 April 2026), and park tickets are sold only through the park authority’s SiOra app (detik, October 2025). Two listings still say the entry is paid on site in cash; ask the operator whether it books your entry in advance.

Seasons and closures

The 10-hour tour’s listing says Komodo Island is run by the government and may close temporarily, especially in November, December and January, with the announcement sometimes on the same day. The overnight listing says July and August are the mating season, when only a few dragons may be seen.

Who should choose what

Choose the day trip if you have one free day and a normal level of fitness. The Komodo Island Day Tour excludes pregnant women and non-swimmers. The shorter speedboat tour excludes pregnant women, wheelchair users, people prone to seasickness, people with pre-existing medical conditions and babies under one year. The island-hop tour asks for physical fitness for a moderate amount of trekking; ask its operator about other limits. Choose the night on board if sunrise at Padar and the Kalong dusk matter more to you than a private room. All options are in the Komodo day tours category.

Our recommendation

For most visitors with one day: the Komodo Island Day Tour with Snorkeling, the most reviewed of the three. With two days, the overnight shared boat. Before paying, confirm in the listing whether the park fee is included.
